Ann Levin Blog Post Philip Guston Painting Titled “Painting. Smoking. Eating.”

Check out this work of art by Philip Guston called Painting, Smoking, Eating. Pretty amazing, huh?

When I saw it in the Guston retrospective at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, a couple years ago, it sent my mind reeling. It made me think about a million different things, including Jabba the Hutt, the egg salad sandwich scene in The Heartbreak Kid, and my history of binge eating.

So, in the spirit of Guston, who once said, “There is nothing to do now but paint my life,” I decided to write an essay about how I felt standing there in that gallery in front of this picture. I called it “Appetites,” and I’m so grateful to Craft literary journal for giving it such a beautiful home.
